Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art akin to “breakdance fighting.”  Since its invention by African slaves in the 16th Century, it has served two roles:  Trickery and self-defense.  These images were commissioned by Capoeira Brasil Los Angeles, an internationally renowned school for use on their website and as publicity stills.  My goal was to capture both the beauty, and the violence of this martial art.

The American Film Institute is sponsored by Audi, and in celebration of the company’s 100th anniversary, they created an “Audi Wall” for guests arriving at the premieres of Precious and Everybody’s Fine to autograph.  I hoped to capture the celebrities, as well as the lush, elegant glamour of the Red Carpet.

]]> http://photobycameron.com/?feed=rss2&p=146 0 http://photobycameron.com/?p=125 http://photobycameron.com/?p=125#comments Fri, 08 Jan 2010 01:07:46 +0000 http://photobycameron.com/?p=125 Ask and Tell is a monthly feature in HIVPlus magazine that profiles a person living with HIV/AIDS who is working to make positive change for others.  For the Dec./Jan. 2010 issue, they chose Kengi Carr, a true survivor.  After being born with Sickle-Cell anemia, he spent much of his twenties and thirties battling five bouts of kidney cancer, topped off by two years of homelessness after the death of a family member.  Still, he remains strong, confident, happy and resolute, and my goal with these images was to help express the joy he exudes.

The published image shows Kengi sitting at the YMCA street across from his apartment in Hollywood — his first permanent home in nearly two years.

The published image was actually an outtake: her stylist made a joke, she turned her head  and laughed just as I released the shutter.

In 2007, I traveled the globe for four months.  During that time, I visited Brazil, Argentina, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, Spain, France and the U.K to see the world and build his portfolio.  The following images were taken while on that journey.
