HIVPlus: Kengi Carr

Ask and Tell is a monthly feature in HIVPlus magazine that profiles a person living with HIV/AIDS who is working to make positive change for others.  For the Dec./Jan. 2010 issue, they chose Kengi Carr, a true survivor.  After being born with Sickle-Cell anemia, he spent much of his twenties and thirties battling five bouts of kidney cancer, topped off by two years of homelessness after the death of a family member.  Still, he remains strong, confident, happy and resolute, and my goal with these images was to help express the joy he exudes.

The published image shows Kengi sitting at the YMCA street across from his apartment in Hollywood — his first permanent home in nearly two years.
